How to make Cannabutter?

With the pot-in-pot method (water bath), you can produce cannabis butter particularly gently and evenly. The method ensures that the cannabinoids (THC and CBD) are preserved as the temperature is always controlled. This tutorial will be a simple but detailed guide on how to make it.

Ingredients:

1. Decarboxylation of cannabis

Before use, you must “activate” the cannabis. This is done by decarboxylation - a process in which heat is used to convert the inactive THCA into psychoactive THC.

  1. Preheat your oven to 110-120 °C.
  2. Roughly crumble the cannabis with a grinder or knife.
  3. Spread the cannabis evenly on a baking tray lined with baking paper.
  4. Bake for 30-40 minutes, turning occasionally to ensure even heating.
  5. The cannabis should be dry and slightly golden brown after baking.

2. Structure of the water bath

The water bath enables even heat distribution and protects the butter from overheating, as the temperature does not rise above 100 °C.

  1. Fill a large pot about 1/3 full with water.
  2. Place a smaller pot or heat-resistant bowl inside so that it does not touch the bottom of the larger pot.
  3. Heat the water over a medium heat until it simmers gently.

3. Melt butter

The butter serves as a fat base to which the cannabinoids bind.

  1. Place 250 g of butter in the smaller saucepan or bowl in the bain-marie.
  2. Melt the butter slowly over a low heat without overheating it.

4. Add cannabis

The decarboxylated cannabis is now added to the melted butter to extract the cannabinoids into the fat molecules.

  1. Add the prepared 7-10g of cannabis (depending on the desired potency) to the melted butter.
  2. Stir the mixture well so that the cannabis is evenly distributed.

5. Leave simmering

During slow simmering, the THC dissolves in the butter. This phase requires patience and a constant, low temperature.

  1. Keep the temperature below 90°C (the butter should only simmer gently).
  2. Let the mixture simmer for 2-3 hours.
  3. Stir every 15-30 minutes so that nothing burns and the butter absorbs the cannabis evenly.

6. Strain

To obtain a smooth butter, remove the plant residues.

  1. Pour the hot mixture through a fine sieve or cheesecloth into this bowl.
  2. Gently squeeze out the plant debris to extract the remaining butter.

7. Cooling and separating

As the mixture cools, the butter will separate from the water.

  1. Leave the mixture to cool at room temperature and then put it in the fridge.
  2. After a few hours, the butter will harden and float on top of the water.
  3. Lift off the solid butter and discard the remaining water.

8. Store

To keep the butter fresh, it must be stored correctly.

  1. Put the finished cannabutter in an airtight glass container.
  2. Store it in the fridge (it will keep for up to 4 weeks).
  3. Alternatively, you can freeze it to extend its shelf life.

Hints

Dosage: The potency of the butter depends on the quality and quantity of cannabis used. Start with small amounts to test the effect.

Safety: Label the butter clearly and keep it away from children and animals.
